Exploring Friesland is perfect by bicycle, because here you will find the best cycle route network of the Netherlands. From Makkum, you can cycle along the IJsselmeer, over dykes full of sheep and through villages where time seems to stand still. Fancy stopping for a coffee on a sunny terrace? Of course!
Four enjoyable routes are available free of charge at reception: Bolsward (27 kilometres), Workum (30 kilometres), Harlingen (40 kilometres) and Sneek (55 kilometres). The routes include charming back roads that you would not have thought of yourself. And very handy: most of them are signposted with cycle junctions. Naturally, the starting and ending point is Camping De Holle Poarte in Makkum.

Discover the beautiful surroundings of Makkum on foot! From Camping De Holle Poarte, you can walk straight onto the dike for some fresh air and a magnificent view of the IJsselmeer. Prefer the village? Take a relaxed walk through Makkum’s charming streets and admire the historic façades and cosy little shops.
For those who want to see more, there are plenty of walking routes in the area that lead you through nature reserves, past lakes and through picturesque Frisian villages.
